BEN SHAW
I have loved music for as long as I can remember, and I have played guitar since I was fairly young. I also love all things technical, and I spent a lot of my childhood helping my father work on cars. In high school, my two interests began to combine as I found myself running live sound and eventually doing maintenance and installations at local music venues.
I decided to study audio engineering at Belmont University. At the time, I wanted to design acoustical spaces conducive to live music. However, I quickly found myself fascinated by all the recording equipment I was learning to use, and it didn’t take long before I was teaching myself electronics.
After two semesters of working as a staff engineer in the student studios, I was hired by Sal Greco at the studio maintenance department, which was responsible for Historic RCA Studio B, Quonset Hut, Ocean Way Nashville, the campus studios, and later the rebuilt Columbia Studio A.
Over the next few years, Sal had me doing everything from routine maintenance to hot-rodding recording consoles to computational room acoustics research. It was during this time that I learned the ins and outs of pro audio electronics on some of the most legendary recording equipment there is.
I eventually began to do freelance gear repair and custom gear design (timberlakeaudio.com). Over the years, I have made custom gear for musicians, audio engineers, and studios. I have also provided gear repair and modification services as well as acoustics and studio design consulting.
One of my clients referred Paul to me for my electronics design services, and we quickly began working on our first design.
